Un théâtre musical afrofuturiste pour imaginer un monde nouveau
Dans SUNVILLE, création de théâtre musical afrofuturiste présentée en première mondiale à la Deutsche Oper Berlin, le contre-ténor Serge Kakudji met sa voix singulière et sa présence scénique au service d’une œuvre consacrée à l’exil, à la reconstruction et à la possibilité d’une société nouvelle.
Imaginé par la compositrice Sofia Jernberg, l’écrivain congolais Fiston Mwanza Mujila et la metteuse en scène et chorégraphe Stephanie Thiersch, le spectacle nous entraîne sur une île où se retrouvent des survivants de la mer, des réfugiés et des exilés. Ensemble, ils tentent de bâtir une communauté libérée des anciennes règles d’origine, de hiérarchie et de pouvoir.
Guidée par les figures de Sun Ra et de Karlheinz Stockhausen, l’œuvre explore l’afrofuturisme comme une forme de résistance par l’imagination. Le livret de Fiston Mwanza Mujila ouvre les portes d’un « Second Monde », où cosmologies africaines, science-fiction noire et satire se rencontrent.
Serge Kakudji au cœur de la création
Serge Kakudji interprète le Boxeur à la retraite. Son timbre lumineux et profondément incarné dialogue avec les voix de Sofia Jernberg, soprano, et de Noa Frenkel, alto, ainsi qu’avec la parole de Fiston Mwanza Mujila.
La musique réunit composition contemporaine, spiritual jazz, improvisation et tradition des griots. Par la puissance expressive de sa voix, Serge Kakudji relie l’intime au cosmique et donne une résonance profondément humaine à cette odyssée afrofuturiste.
Dans un espace où langage, son et mouvement se transforment continuellement, SUNVILLE brouille les frontières entre réalité et fiction, passé et avenir, avant de poser une question essentielle : comment voulons-nous vivre ?

Afrofuturistic musical theatre imagining a new world
In SUNVILLE, an Afrofuturistic musical theatre production receiving its world premiere at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, countertenor Serge Kakudji brings his distinctive voice and powerful stage presence to a work exploring exile, reconstruction and the possibility of a new society.
Created by composer Sofia Jernberg, Congolese writer Fiston Mwanza Mujila, and director and choreographer Stephanie Thiersch, the production takes us to an island inhabited by survivors of the sea, refugees and exiles. Together, they attempt to build a community free from old rules of origin, hierarchy and power.
Guided by the figures of Sun Ra and Karlheinz Stockhausen, the work explores Afrofuturism as a form of resistance through imagination. Fiston Mwanza Mujila’s libretto opens the doors to a “Second World,” where African cosmologies, Black science fiction and biting satire collide.
Serge Kakudji at the heart of the production
As the production’s countertenor, Serge Kakudji holds an essential place within this artistic constellation. His luminous and deeply expressive timbre enters into dialogue with Sofia Jernberg, soprano, Noa Frenkel, alto, and the storytelling of Fiston Mwanza Mujila.
The music combines contemporary composition, spiritual jazz, improvisation and the griot tradition. Through the expressive power of his voice, Serge Kakudji connects the intimate with the cosmic, giving this Afrofuturistic odyssey a profoundly human resonance.
In a space where language, sound and movement are constantly transformed, SUNVILLE dissolves the boundaries between reality and fiction, past and future, before asking a fundamental question: how do we want to live?

In SUNVILLE, einer afrofuturistischen Musiktheaterproduktion, die an der Deutschen Oper Berlin uraufgeführt wird, stellt der international renommierte Countertenor Serge Kakudji seine unverwechselbare Stimme und eindrucksvolle Bühnenpräsenz in den Dienst eines Werks über Exil, Neuanfang und die Möglichkeit einer neuen Gesellschaft.
Die Produktion der Komponistin Sofia Jernberg, des kongolesisch-österreichischen Schriftstellers Fiston Mwanza Mujila und der Regisseurin und Choreografin Stephanie Thiersch führt das Publikum auf eine Insel, auf der Überlebende des Meeres, Geflüchtete und Menschen im Exil zusammentreffen. Gemeinsam versuchen sie, eine Gemeinschaft aufzubauen, die sich von den überlieferten Regeln über Herkunft, Hierarchie und Macht befreit.

Als Countertenor nimmt Serge Kakudji eine wesentliche Rolle in dieser künstlerischen Konstellation ein. Sein leuchtendes und ausdrucksstarkes Timbre tritt in einen Dialog mit der Sopranistin Sofia Jernberg, der Altistin Noa Frenkel und der Erzählkunst von Fiston Mwanza Mujila.
Die Musik verbindet zeitgenössische Komposition, Spiritual Jazz, Improvisation und die Tradition der Griots. Mit der Ausdruckskraft seiner Stimme schlägt Serge Kakudji eine Brücke zwischen dem Intimen und dem Kosmischen und verleiht dieser afrofuturistischen Odyssee eine zutiefst menschliche Dimension.
In einem Raum, in dem Sprache, Klang und Bewegung sich fortwährend verwandeln, lässt SUNVILLE die Grenzen zwischen Wirklichkeit und Fiktion, Vergangenheit und Zukunft verschwimmen. Dabei stellt das Werk eine grundlegende Frage: Wie wollen wir leben?
